The Story

The Cocoon Hotels group was founded in Munich and built its identity around the idea of the cocoon as a place of transformation and rest. The butterfly motif is not decorative afterthought: it runs through the architecture and the room naming at the Salzburg property, from the butterfly outline etched into the entrance glass to the Deluxe Butterfly Double rooms with their bold-coloured walls and designer bathroom fixtures. The brand’s founders reportedly drew on research about urban stress when developing the concept, wanting a hotel that functioned as a genuine retreat rather than just a place to sleep.

The Salzburg location at Rainerstraße 29 sits about 300 metres from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, which is its primary logistical advantage. The Elisabeth-Vorstadt neighbourhood is quieter than the station immediately suggests, though sound-proof tilting windows are standard on all 119 rooms. The room typology ranges from compact Urban Cocoon doubles at 15 square metres with cork flooring to the Natural-themed rooms with stone floors and vegan toiletries, to the larger Butterfly suites.

Each room includes a Cocoon Bubble Chair, a swinging, enveloping seat that has become the brand’s most photographed object. UHD Smart TVs, Nespresso machines in some room types, minibar, and free Wi-Fi complete the package. The raindance shower and organic/vegan toiletries give the bathroom a quality above the room rate’s expectation.

The breakfast buffet at €19.90 covers a full spread of seasonal fruit, fresh rolls, warm dishes, and self-service drinks. The lounge bar runs around the clock, with tacos, cookies, and coffee available without a fixed closing time, which makes early departures and late arrivals significantly less stressful.

The Altstadt is accessible from the hotel in around 20 minutes on foot, or a short bus connection. Mirabell Gardens is about 0.6 miles away.
