Hyperion Hotel Salzburg

The Hyperion Hotel opened in 2022 inside Palais Faber, a Wilhelminian mansion that brewery magnate Moritz Faber built in 1874 on Rainerstraße. It is Austria’s first Hyperion Hotel and the most recent addition to the city’s five-star portfolio, with 115 rooms behind a listed heritage facade that the restoration was legally required to leave unchanged.

The Story

Moritz Faber built his four-house mansion block in 1874 with a clear ambition: to bring Viennese Ringstrasse grandeur to the newly opened-up district across from Mirabell Gardens. Salzburg architect Valentin Ceconi designed the Wilhelminian structure with rusticated stonework, ornate cornices, and symmetrical windows that still define the street character of Rainerstraße today. The Faber family lived there for generations before the building shifted to offices and apartments in the 20th century.

The 1944 Allied bombing campaign hit roughly 46% of Salzburg’s buildings but missed this corner. The thick masonry held, and the original marble staircases and stained-glass windows survived intact. After the war, American troops used properties in the area, and the Palais eventually settled into office and commercial use, its heritage status protecting it from demolition but leaving it without a clear purpose.

Developer Soravia acquired the building and committed roughly EUR 60 million to the conversion. The Federal Office for Protection of Monuments supervised the project, which meant the 1874 facade, the cornices, and the period stonework could not be altered. Unykat Design worked within that constraint to produce contemporary interiors in wood, metal, glass, and stone that read as clearly modern without conflicting with the historic container. The Hyperion Hotel opened in 2022 as Austria’s first property under the brand and the only five-star hotel in the Neustadt district outside the Sheraton Grand.

The 115 rooms, all non-smoking, include 16 suites with terraces of 45-50 sqm. Heated floors, rain-shower bathrooms, and espresso machines are standard. The Gaumenfreund restaurant and an executive lounge operate in the restored wing. Guest reviews consistently rate the design-amenity balance at 9.6 out of 10.

Visiting

Rainerstraße 4, in the Neustadt one kilometre from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and ten minutes’ walk from the Altstadt. Mirabell Gardens and the Congress Center are close. The building’s listed heritage means the exterior experience is genuinely 19th-century; only once you step inside does the contemporary hotel reveal itself. The hotel suits design-conscious travellers and visitors attending congresses who want a five-star stay without the Altstadt price premium.
