Salzburg Congress

Salzburg Congress is the city’s principal convention and congress centre, opened in 2001 after an international design competition. It sits immediately adjacent to Mirabellplatz on the right bank and holds up to 2,500 attendees. Its Europa Saal, the flagship hall, seats 1,350 and is configured for everything from conferences to galas.

The Story

The building has a deliberate origin story. By the early 1990s Salzburg’s existing congress hall was too small and too dated to compete for the international conferences the city wanted. The 1995 design competition attracted European firms and was won by Friedrich Brandstätter and Ernst Maurer, whose proposal offered a glass-concrete structure that opened a visual connection between Mirabellplatz and the Salzach River rather than blocking it.

The old hall was demolished in 1998 and the new building opened in 2001 after costs escalated to approximately EUR 120 million. The architects chose a neutral palette: grey concrete, clear glass, and a double-skin curtain wall that admits daylight while reducing glare, keeping the building visually subordinate to the baroque skyline beyond the windows. Inside, the minimalist International Style approach gives spaces that reconfigure freely between conference and performance formats.

The Europa Saal is the flagship room: 812 m² of floor, a permanent stage, blackout capability, and Swarovski lighting that shifts the mood from working conference to evening event. It subdivides into three named rooms for smaller sessions.

For the city’s economy, the congress centre matters beyond the events themselves. Salzburg’s Festival is intense but compressed to summer; the congress calendar distributes visitors more evenly across the year, sustaining the right-bank hotel district and restaurant trade through seasons that would otherwise be quieter.
