The Leopoldskroner Weiher is a 13-hectare lake in the Leopoldskron-Moos district, sitting directly beside Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg's Rococo palace. It is about 2 km south of the Altstadt, free to visit, and almost entirely free of crowds at any hour before eight in the morning.
The Story
The lake was originally dug as a flood-retention basin, part of Salzburg's historic water management system that channelled alpine runoff away from the lower city. The straight, flat banks still carry the geometry of something built for function. What now looks picturesque was once engineering.
Schloss Leopoldskron came later, built in the 1730s for Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian in the Rococo style, and the palace-lake relationship defined the site's character for the following centuries. Max Reinhardt, the Austrian theatre director who co-founded the Salzburg Festival, bought the palace in 1918 and used it as a private estate and creative retreat for two decades. After World War II, the Salzburg Global Seminar took over the property in 1947, and it has hosted international scholars and diplomats ever since. The palace is not open to the general public, but it is fully visible from across the water.
The Sound of Music connection is real: the lake-facing terrace of Schloss Leopoldskron served as the exterior of the von Trapp family home in the 1965 film, and the famous scene in which the children tumble into the water was filmed here. For visitors who care about this, the view from the far bank is the right angle.
What makes the Weiher worth a visit beyond the film connection is the walk itself. The flat path around the perimeter takes about 30 minutes, the water is calm, and the combination of the Rococo palace on one bank and the Mönchsberg ridge in the distance gives the setting a different quality from the Altstadt. The lake is also a serious birdwatching spot, with waterfowl including Mandarin Ducks and Greylag Geese present year-round.

Leopoldskron-Moos district, approximately 2 km south of the Altstadt. Always accessible, free. Bus lines 22 or 25 from the city centre, or about 25 minutes on foot from Festungsgasse. Best visited at dawn or dusk. Combine with Schloss Leopoldskron (exterior viewing from the path).
