Magazin occupies a former storage building at Augustinergasse 13, cut into the base of the Monchsberg. The wine list is one of the most serious in Salzburg, and the kitchen matches it. This is the grown-up dining option west of the Altstadt.
The Story
The name is literal: the building was a Magazin, a storage facility, and the stone walls and lower ceilings of that original use still shape the interior. Augustinergasse 13 sits close to where the Monchsberg cliff meets the city street, a few minutes' walk from the Augustiner Braustuebl Muelln and from the path up to the Museum der Moderne.
The wine list runs deep into Austrian producers, with particular strength in natural and minimal-intervention wines. The arrangement is part-restaurant, part-wine shop: bottles can be bought at cellar prices and taken home, which changes the dynamic of the room. People come to eat, to drink, and to leave with something in hand.
The kitchen applies modern technique to Austrian ingredients without making a show of it. Mains run around EUR 20-35. During Festival season the room fills with a particular mix of performers, organisers, and the international visitors who follow the programme. Out of season it returns to Salzburg's food-literate regulars, which is its more natural state.
