The NH Collection on Franz-Josef-Straße opened in 1988 as one of the Spanish chain’s first premium European city hotels, five minutes’ walk from Mirabell and alongside Linzergasse. It sits in a practical middle ground: more polished than a standard business hotel, less expensive than the independent Salzburg luxury tier.

The Story

Antonio Catalán’s NH Group opened the Salzburg property in 1988 with a deliberate logic: the Andräviertel location placed it within five minutes of Mirabell Gardens, Mozart’s Birthplace, and the Linzergasse shopping and dining strip, while keeping it close enough to the main station for easy rail access. The five-storey building used locally quarried limestone for its facade, a material choice that cut costs and gave it a warm stone tone that holds its own against the city’s historic palette.

The hotel was renovated in 2009, with every one of the 140 rooms refitted with contemporary fixtures, hardwood floors sourced from Austrian forests, pillow-top mattresses, and rain-effect showers. The work also redesigned the lobby bar and restaurant into a more open, light-filled space. A second round of sustainability upgrades followed, adding LED lighting throughout, water-efficient showers, and energy-saving room controls. The hotel now operates on 100% renewable electricity and holds Bioscore and ISO 14001 environmental certifications.

Rooms sit at around 25 sqm, efficient by luxury standards but well-specified. Upper-floor suites offer views of Kapuzinerberg. A rooftop terrace provides a quiet outdoor space with mountain glimpses, and the five-storey structure’s garage connects to pedestrian lanes on Linzergasse. The NH Collection tier positions it as a reliable premium chain option: high-specification rooms, a loyalty programme, and genuine proximity to the city’s key sites, without the premium of an independent historic address.

Franz-Josef-Straße 26, in the Andräviertel, with Mirabell Gardens five minutes away on foot and Linzergasse directly alongside the hotel. The Altstadt is a ten-to-fifteen-minute walk across one of the Salzach bridges. Garage parking is available on site. The hotel suits travellers who want a polished chain stay with genuine central Salzburg access at a price below the major five-star properties. Rates are generally competitive within the NH Collection range.
