The Red Bull Arena in Wals-Siezenheim, next to Salzburg Airport, is the home of FC Red Bull Salzburg, the club that has reshaped Austrian football since Dietrich Mateschitz acquired it in 2005. Around 30,000 capacity. Also the region’s main arena for large-scale concerts and events.

The Story

Before Red Bull, the club was SV Casino Salzburg, a mid-tier Austrian side with modest resources. The 2005 acquisition brought not just a rebrand but a complete structural change: a global scouting network, a feeder system that now includes sister clubs in Leipzig, New York, and Brazil, and a consistent presence in European competition that was unthinkable for Austrian clubs a generation ago.

The arena itself was purpose-built in 2003, then redeveloped as the brand identity evolved. Its location in Wals-Siezenheim, wedged between the airport and the motorway junction, is less picturesque than Salzburg’s Altstadt but practically suited to handling large crowds. Ample parking, direct motorway access, and proximity to the airport have also made it the default venue for major touring concerts in the Salzburg region.

For visitors with an interest in the Red Bull phenomenon, the arena sits alongside Hangar 7 as part of the Mateschitz infrastructure that transformed the city’s outer edge into a zone of branded spectacle. Whether that story reads as civic enrichment or corporate takeover depends on the visitor, but as a case study in what private capital does to a mid-sized European sporting club, it is hard to find a cleaner example.
