The Story
The name came in 2000, when the airport adopted the title "W.A. Mozart" to mark the composer's connection to the city. It joins a short list of airports named after artists rather than politicians or geography. Whether or not visitors notice the name on their boarding pass, the airport's real selling point is the journey time: under 20 minutes to the centre by bus, or a short taxi ride.
Traffic at SZG follows a clear seasonal rhythm. The Salzburg Festival in July and August brings a surge of international arrivals for opera and concerts. The winter ski season adds another peak as travellers transit toward the Salzburgerland resorts. Outside those windows, the airport operates at a more measured pace, mainly serving routes from within Europe.
Hangar 7, the Red Bull aviation and art complex immediately adjacent, is freely accessible and worth time if you have a gap before departure or arrival.
