The Schwarzes Rossl sits just off Linzer Gasse, the Neustadt’s busiest street, in the part of Salzburg that most visitors see from the bridge but rarely sleep in. It is a reliable, characterful mid-range choice with quick bridge access to the Altstadt.

The Story

The Black Horse takes its name from a tradition of Austrian inn naming that pairs common animals with colours: its more famous counterpart, the Weisses Rossl (White Horse), stands on the Wolfgangsee at St. Wolfgang and was immortalised by operetta. The Schwarzes Rossl in Salzburg carries no such cultural weight, but it does carry the practical advantages of a well-placed Neustadt address.

Linzer Gasse is the Neustadt’s spine: a pedestrian street lined with bakeries, coffee houses, bookshops, and neighbourhood restaurants that serve a different clientele to the tourist-facing establishments of the Altstadt. Staying on or near this street means eating alongside locals rather than alongside visitors, which is a different rhythm entirely.

The hotel is part of the Academia Hotels group and operates accordingly: clean, reliable, mid-range, without pretension in either direction. The Altstadt is five minutes away across the Staatsbrücke. The Mirabell Gardens are a short walk north. For travellers who find the Altstadt’s pedestrian lanes too enclosed, the Neustadt side offers more breathing room and usually lower room rates.

The property operates seasonally for outreach purposes, running June through September.
