The most famous inn in the Salzkammergut, directly on the shore of the Wolfgangsee at St. Wolfgang. Documented as a hostelry since the 14th century. Still operating as hotel and restaurant, the lakeside terrace unchanged in spirit.
Most places with a famous name disappoint in person. The Weißes Rössl does not. Ralph Benatzky’s 1930 operetta Im weißen Rößl made this lakeside inn internationally famous, a frothy comedy set on its terrace that became one of the greatest hits of the interwar operetta stage and has never left the repertoire. The joke the operetta is built on is that the setting is so beautiful it drives people slightly mad.
Standing at the terrace in summer, it is easy to understand why. The painted facade, the flower boxes, the rowing boats below, the Schafberg rising across the lake: it really does look like a stage set. But the quality of the experience is entirely real: the terrace is one of the most enjoyable places to eat in the entire Salzkammergut, and the inn has been welcoming people to this exact spot for over six centuries.

The greatest operetta composer of the early 20th century. Lehar spent his summers in Bad Ischl for decades, as part of the same tradition as Emperor Franz Joseph I. His summer villa, the Leharvilla Bad Ischl, is now a museum. He died there in 1948.
