The Story

The Spielzeugmuseum sits inside the Bürgerspital, a former almshouse whose courtyard setting gives it an atmosphere distinctly quieter than the tourist bustle a few steps away on Getreidegasse. The collection covers several centuries of European toy-making, from mechanical toys and dolls to puppets, miniature worlds, and games. Modest in scale but genuinely well-curated, it is one of Salzburg’s more pleasant surprises for families who discover it.

The building also contains the Burgerspitalkirche, so a single stop yields two things worth seeing.
