The Bürgerspitalkirche dates to around 1330, making it one of the oldest Gothic structures in Salzburg. It was the church of the citizens' almshouse and hospital, tucked near the western end of Getreidegasse. The connected building now houses the Spielzeugmuseum.
The Story
Most visitors spend their time in Salzburg's baroque churches, and the city's ecclesiastical map is genuinely dominated by that 17th-century campaign. The Bürgerspitalkirche belongs to an earlier moment: the civic Gothic of the medieval city, funded not by the Archbishop but by the citizens' guild.
The Bürgerspital was a complex that served as both almshouse and hospital for Salzburg's citizens. The church was its spiritual centre, dating to around 1330. A small courtyard cemetery still survives as a trace of the hospital compound; the Bürgerspital building attached to it now houses the Spielzeugmuseum.
Inside the church, the draw is the contrast. The baroque churches in the Altstadt layer on marble, fresco, gilded stucco, and trompe-l'oeil ceilings. The Bürgerspitalkirche is plain: pointed Gothic arches, bare walls, a simplicity that makes the silence feel deliberate rather than neglected. For a traveller who has spent time in the city's baroque interiors, this space reads completely differently.
