The Staatsbrücke is the main bridge across the Salzach in central Salzburg, connecting the Altstadt on the left bank to the Neustadt and Linzer Gasse on the right. The current structure dates to 1938. Most visitors cross it at least once; it is the natural east-west axis of the city centre.
The Story
A bridge has stood at roughly this crossing point for a very long time; the Salzach was the line that divided the archbishop's city from the trading and residential districts that grew on the opposite bank, and keeping a crossing here was essential to both. The current concrete bridge replaced an earlier structure and carries both pedestrian and vehicle traffic, which makes it less pleasant to stand on than the quieter pedestrian bridges north and south of it.
What the Staatsbrücke offers is a moment of orientation. Standing in the middle and looking south, you see the Altstadt waterfront in one direction and the open bend of the river in the other; Hohensalzburg Fortress sits above the roofline to the southwest. Looking north, the view is more open: the river straightens and the city edges become visible. It is the clearest single vantage point for understanding how the Salzach divides the city and how both halves relate to each other.
The east end of the bridge opens onto the Linzer Gasse area, a long street of shops, cafes, and guesthouses that is less tourist-oriented than the Altstadt and worth exploring for that reason.
Visiting
The bridge is always open and free. It carries vehicle traffic as well as pedestrians, so crossing it is more functional than scenic. The Mozartsteg to the south and the Müllnersteg to the north are pedestrian-only alternatives with better views. The Linzer Gasse begins immediately on the right bank at the east end of the bridge.
