Stiftskirche Mattsee

The Story

Most of the Salzburg region’s ecclesiastical history begins in the baroque, or at the earliest with the Romanesque abbeys of the 11th and 12th centuries. Stift Mattsee goes back further. Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria founded a collegiate church here in 777 AD, and within a generation the site was associated with the Carolingian court itself. Emperor Charlemagne held assemblies at Mattsee, a detail that places this small lakeside town in a European frame most visitors would not anticipate.

The church that stands today combines Romanesque structural elements with Gothic modifications, the layers of twelve centuries of incremental building visible in the masonry and the proportions. The hilltop position offers views over the lake, which has been a settled landscape since the Iron Age.

The Stiftsmuseum holds the most historically significant objects: Carolingian manuscripts and early medieval liturgical pieces that represent the kind of artefact you might expect to find in a national museum rather than a modest country church. These are, as far as can be confirmed from the published holdings, among the oldest surviving documents accessible to visitors in the broader Salzburg region.
