Volksgarten

Volksgarten is a public park in the Neustadt containing Salzburg’s oldest outdoor swimming pool, opened in 1892. The park covers around 13,000 m², with two main pools, a children’s area, a seasonal sand beach, and a winter ice rink. It functions as a neighbourhood facility used by right-bank residents rather than a tourist destination.

The Story

The park and its pool were established under Emperor Franz Joseph I in the final decade of the 19th century as part of Salzburg’s civic expansion on the right bank. The original outdoor pool, opened in June 1892, was unusual for its time in offering heated water year-round - a novelty that drew residents from across the city.

The pool’s dimensions have not changed substantially: two main basins at 21x33 metres, a children’s shallow pool, and what is now branded as the SalzBeach, a 1,000 m² gravel-and-sand sunbathing area beside the water. A winter ice rink fills part of the space from late autumn onward.

As a place to visit, Volksgarten operates on different terms from the Mirabell Gardens nearby. Where the Mirabell draws tourists to its baroque geometry and fountain, the Volksgarten draws locals to do ordinary things: swim, run along the jogging paths, sit under trees, bring children to the slide. The two parks together give a more complete picture of how the Neustadt uses its green space.

For visitors staying on the right bank, the pool is a practical option on warm days, offering an affordable swim in pleasant surroundings without needing to travel far.

Visiting

Franz-Josef-Strasse in the Neustadt, about 10 minutes on foot from Mirabellplatz. Park always free. Outdoor pool open approximately May to mid-September, 09:00-19:00; EUR 6 adults, EUR 3.60 children. Winter ice rink operates seasonally. No booking required.
