Zwölferhorn

The Zwölferhorn rises to 1,522 m directly behind St. Gilgen on the western shore of the Wolfgangsee, reached by cable car from the village centre in about 10 minutes. The summit delivers a panorama over thirteen Salzkammergut lakes on a clear day and is among the least-crowded mountain stations in the region.

The Story

St. Gilgen sits at the western end of the Wolfgangsee, quieter than St. Wolfgang on the opposite shore and often passed through rather than stopped at. Behind the village, the Zwölferhorn rises abruptly, its cable car station sitting right in the village square. The lift is quick and the transition total: from lakeside village to open alpine ridge in under a quarter hour.

The view from the summit is the argument for coming. Thirteen lakes laid out across the Salzkammergut on a clear day, with the Dachstein massif anchoring the southern horizon and the Wolfgangsee visible directly below. The panorama is broader than most visitors expect, extending well beyond the immediate lake basin to a landscape of peaks and water that makes the Salzkammergut legible in a way it is not from the valley floor.

The mountain stays quieter than its access would suggest. The same route that serves the Schafberg from St. Wolfgang brings visitors to the eastern shore of the Wolfgangsee, not the western. The St. Gilgen end of the lake draws less foot traffic, and the Zwölferhorn benefits from this, offering genuine mountain solitude within a short distance of a busy tourist region.

Good hiking terrain exists at the top, with several marked trails ranging from easy ridge walks to more demanding descents through forest back to the village. The cable car offers the option to go up by lift and walk down.

Visiting

The cable car station is at Konrad-Lesiak-Platz 3 in St. Gilgen, walkable from the village waterfront. Bus 150 connects Salzburg with St. Gilgen in approximately 30 minutes; Wolfgangsee ferries provide an alternative connection from St. Wolfgang. The cable car operates year-round with seasonal variations; check zwoelferhorn.at for current hours. The gondola is barrier-free. A summit restaurant is open during operating hours. Hiking trails from the summit are marked; descending on foot to St. Gilgen is feasible with appropriate footwear and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The mountain combines naturally with a lake walk or ferry trip along the Wolfgangsee.
