Ramsau am Dachstein is the plateau village that faces the glacier. Sitting at around 1,100 metres in Styria above the resort town of Schladming, it looks directly across to the ice-capped Dachstein massif, a view that has made it one of the most photographed alpine landscapes in Austria. The pace here is slow and deliberately so: cross-country skiing in winter, high-altitude hiking in summer, and none of the crowd noise of the resort below.

The Story

The view from the Ramsau plateau is not incidental. The village layout, a scattered arrangement of Ortsteile stretching from the valley floor up to 2,350 metres, was shaped in the medieval period specifically to maximise sun exposure on the south-facing slopes. The result is a settlement that opens to the south and the Dachstein, which means the glacier and its capped summit are visible from almost every part of the village.

Ramsau has built its identity around the cross-country skiing tradition. The plateau’s gentle terrain and reliable snow record made it a natural site for the sport, and the village hosts training and competition at a national level. This gives Ramsau a very different winter character from Schladming below: quieter, more Nordic in atmosphere, oriented toward endurance rather than downhill thrills.

In summer the Dachstein itself becomes the draw. The cable car up to the glacier gives access to the Skywalk suspension bridge at 2,700 metres and to the ice caves inside the mountain, two experiences that bring visitors from across the Salzkammergut and Styria. The 200-km plateau trail network serves hikers who want serious distance without needing a guide, with the Five Huts Trail being the classic route from Ramsau Ort to the base of the Dachstein wall.

A short drive down the valley brings you to the cultural side of the area: the loden weaving mill at Rössing, operating continuously for centuries, produces the dense felted wool fabric that has been a signature of Alpine textile craft since the medieval period.

Planning

Ramsau am Dachstein is in Styria, roughly 90 km east of Salzburg by road (approximately 80 minutes via the A10 and the Ennstal). The nearest rail connection is Schladming in the valley below, from which local buses or a short drive reach the plateau. In winter the cross-country ski network on the plateau is the primary draw; a separate lift ticket covers the downhill area at Schladming. In summer, combine with the Dachstein glacier cable car and ice caves (accessed from the plateau or from Hallstatt/Obertraun on the other side). The Gosaukamm ridge and Gosau lakes are accessible for day trips, broadening the itinerary into the Salzkammergut. Elevation on the plateau: approximately 1,000-1,200 metres.
