Gosau is the quiet end of the Salzkammergut, a Upper Austrian village at the mouth of the Gosautal where the view across the Vorderer Gosausee to the glaciated Dachstein summit and the Gosaukamm ridge is among the most photographed alpine panoramas in Austria. It is also the least crowded approach to the Dachstein massif, sitting on the opposite side from the better-known Hallstatt and Ramsau corridors.
The Story
The Gosautal draws its power from one specific combination: a foreground lake and a background glacier. The Vorderer Gosausee is clear and still enough in calm weather to mirror the Dachstein's ice cap and the jagged limestone teeth of the Gosaukamm ridge above it. The 45-minute path around the lake is flat, well-maintained, and rewards any season: spring snowmelt, summer clarity, autumn colour, winter stillness.
For those who want more than the lake walk, the Gosaukamm cable car lifts you onto the high ridge for alpine pasture hiking with a direct view back down the valley. Dachstein West is the associated ski area, running from beginner slopes to steeper terrain, with the Zwieselalm lift offering scenic rides close to the lake level. The 12.6-km hike from the Vorderer to the Hinterer Gosausee, a 261-metre climb taking roughly three hours, passes the shallow Gosaulacke pond and gives a sense of the valley's full length.
The Urzeitwald at the foot of the Gosaukamm is a free family trail through 25 stations representing the geological history of the region, from the limestone seabed that became the Dachstein through to the present landscape. It sits outside the mainstream visitor circuit but is one of the better-designed free outdoor experiences in the area.
Gosau's position in the itinerary is typically as an addition to Hallstatt rather than a standalone destination. They are close enough to combine in a single day: the Gosausee in the morning, Hallstatt in the afternoon, with the famous Bone House and Prehistoric Museum rounding out the day.

Gosau is approximately 65 km from Salzburg by car, roughly 45 minutes via the A10 and through Golling. Bus Line 541 connects from Bad Ischl to the Gosausee; from Salzburg combine train and bus via Golling. The Salzkammergut Shuttle connects to 60 World Heritage sites in the region (pre-registration required for groups). The Gosaukamm cable car charges around EUR 18-22 round trip (B-grade from research). Parking at the Vorderer Gosausee: EUR 10 per day. Gosau pairs naturally with Hallstatt (20 minutes by car) and with the Bad Ischl spa town. The Dachstein West ski area is the winter draw; summer hiking peaks July to September.
