At the Gschütt pass where Salzburg’s Tennengau meets Upper Austria, Rußbach is the gateway to the Gosau valley and the western face of the Dachstein. The Gosausee, one of Austria’s most photographed alpine lakes, lies just over the pass.

The Story

The Gschütt pass road climbs out of Abtenau through the Tennengau and crests at around 900 metres before dropping into the Gosau valley in Upper Austria. Rußbach am Pass Gschütt sits right at this crossing, which has historically been a transit point between the two provinces and a gateway to the Dachstein massif from the west.

The Gosau side offers the more dramatic scenery: the Gosausee, a glacially carved lake below the Gosaukamm ridgeline, has direct sightlines to the Dachstein glacier and the limestone towers above. Rußbach gives access to this landscape from the Salzburg side, with the ski lifts of the Dachstein West area serving the surrounding terrain in winter.

In summer, the pass area and the Gosau valley are walking country, with trails leading up toward the Gosaukamm and the Dachstein massif proper. The scale of the limestone ridge above makes even a modest walk feel rewarding. Winter skiing here is less famous than the major Pongau resorts but more accessible for visitors based in the Tennengau or Salzburg itself.

The village offers little beyond function, but its position makes it a useful stopping point: anyone driving from Salzburg toward Hallstatt via the Gosau valley passes through here, and the Gosausee viewpoint is genuinely worth the detour.

Planning

Getting there: from Salzburg, roughly 50-55 km via Hallein and Abtenau on the B162 pass road. No direct train; the nearest rail access is Salzburg-Hallein-Abtenau area, then bus. A car is effectively required for the pass itself.

Combining: The Gosausee is an obvious first stop after the pass. Continuing through the Gosau valley reaches Bad Ischl (roughly 40 km from Rußbach). Combines well with Abtenau and the Tennengau valley on a Salzburg-Salzkammergut loop.

When to visit: Summer for hiking and the Gosausee; winter for skiing. The Gschütt pass road may require winter tyres or chains in snowy conditions. The Gosausee is at its most dramatic with snow on the Dachstein (late October through May).

Practical: Accommodation options in the village itself are limited; Gosau village (over the pass) and Abtenau offer better choice. Day trip from Salzburg is entirely feasible.
