The alpine meadow above Werfen where the Do-Re-Mi picnic sequence from The Sound of Music was filmed in 1964. A 1.4-kilometre trail leads up from the village, free and open year-round. Festung Hohenwerfen fills the backdrop below.
The Story
The meadow has a name: Gschwandtanger Wiesn. It sits roughly 400 metres above Werfen village, and it is one of the few Sound of Music filming locations still freely accessible to the public. The scene filmed here is the Do-Re-Mi montage, the sequence in which Maria runs through the hills with the von Trapp children, teaching them to sing with a valley and a medieval fortress as the backdrop.
That fortress, Festung Hohenwerfen, also has a second filming identity: it appears as Schloss Adler in the 1968 war thriller Where Eagles Dare, making one hillside viewpoint a location shared by two entirely different films separated by four years and one climactic military heist.
The 50th anniversary of the film in 2015 brought a trail renovation that transformed the hike into something more than a pilgrimage route. A Magic Cube solar kiosk at the trailhead runs short clips from the film; Lyric Blocks along the path let visitors rearrange Do-Re-Mi verses; a free audio guide narrated by Nicholas Hammond, who played Friedrich von Trapp in the film, is available through the SmartGuide app. The narration lasts about 45 minutes, matching the climb. The guide uses first-person film recollections to give the meadow a layer of storytelling that the landscape alone cannot provide.
Visiting
Trail starts from the tourist office gate in the centre of Werfen. The Gschwandtanger Wiesn is 1.4 km from the trailhead, 45 to 60 minutes uphill. Free access, no admission. Well-marked and renovated, suitable for most abilities in dry conditions; sturdy footwear recommended. Best in late spring and summer. Train from Salzburg takes approximately 40 minutes; the station is a short walk from the trailhead. Combine with Festung Hohenwerfen for a full day. Eisriesenwelt ice caves are also reachable from Werfen.
