The cafe on Alter Markt that carries the Tomaselli name has been serving coffee in the same location since around 1700. Mozart drank here. The interior has barely changed. It is among the oldest coffee houses in Austria and one of Salzburg’s most direct lines back to the 18th century.

The Story

The cafe on Alter Markt predates the Tomaselli family. Records place a coffee house in that location from around 1700, in the heart of the Baroque city, a few steps from the Residenzplatz and the archbishop’s court. The Tomaselli family took over the proprietorship during the mid-18th century and gave it the name that has held ever since. The timing matters: this was Mozart’s Salzburg. He grew up in the city, his father Leopold held a court position, and the social geography of the Altstadt was small enough that the cafe on Alter Markt was simply part of daily life. Mozart was a customer.

The family’s hold on the establishment solidified over generations. The most thoroughly documented figure is Carl Tomaselli der Altere, born in Vienna in 1809 into a family with artistic and theatrical roots. His father was a Milanese tenor who had sung for the Prince-Archbishop’s chapel. Carl trained as a confectioner, became a Salzburg citizen in 1834, and in 1852 purchased the Staigersche Kaffeehaus on Alter Markt for 36,000 Gulden, renaming it Cafe Tomaselli and cementing the family’s ownership in the formal record. He died in 1887 at 77, and the family maintained the business without interruption.

The result is a cafe where the history is not performed but simply present. The oak panelling, the marble counters, the small rooms looking onto the square: these are the spaces where 18th-century Salzburg took its coffee, read its papers, and received its visitors. For a city that trades heavily on Mozart, Cafe Tomaselli is one of the few places where the connection is not a reproduction.
