The archbishop who built the Romanesque Salzburg Cathedral that stood for over four centuries. Konrad I oversaw an ambitious rebuilding of the cathedral on a grand scale during his long archiepiscopate (1106-1147), creating the great church that defined the city’s skyline until Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau demolished it in 1598 to make way for the baroque cathedral visitors see today.
He was canonised as a saint by Pope Lucius III in 1183, making him one of only a handful of Salzburg archbishops to receive that distinction. The feast of St. Conrad is still observed in Salzburg. His legacy connects the city’s modern cathedral directly to the medieval foundations from which it grew.

The first baroque cathedral built in the German-speaking world, and the dominant church at the heart of Salzburg's Altstadt. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised here on 28 January 1756. The site has held a cathedral since 774, when Saint Virgil of Salzburg consecrated the first one.
