The painter of Stift St. Peter. Born in Naples as Martino Johann Hohenberger, Altomonte adopted an Italian name and spent decades creating altarpieces for Austria’s churches and monasteries. His altar paintings in St. Peter’s enrich the abbey church that Saint Rupert himself founded.
If Rottmayr defined the Cathedral and Troger the Residenz, Altomonte’s work completes the trio. Together they represent the full baroque visual world of Salzburg’s golden age.
