An archbishop who was also a sculptor. Before his elevation, Thiemo was a gifted craftsman at Stift St. Peter, producing metalwork, ivory carvings, and altar pieces of exceptional quality. The combination of artistic talent and ecclesiastical authority was rare even by medieval standards.
As archbishop he continued Gebhard's reformist tradition and proved himself a vigorous defender of papal authority. He also expanded the building programme at Hohensalzburg Fortress.
In 1101, Thiemo joined the Crusade of 1101, a follow-up expedition to the First Crusade. He was captured by Seljuk forces in Anatolia, refused to renounce his faith, and was martyred at Askalon in 1102. He was beatified by the Catholic Church. His feast day is 28 September.
