A 16-storey glass-and-steel design hotel opened in 2019, the Arte Hotel brings a deliberately modernist statement to the Elisabeth-Vorstadt, a few minutes’ walk from the main station and 15 minutes on foot from the Altstadt. More character and ambition than a standard transit hotel, with a rooftop bar and a programme of rotating local art.

The Story

The Arte Hotel Salzburg opened in spring 2019 as part of the IPP Hotels group, whose owner Alexander Ipp reportedly built the portfolio to include around nine properties spanning Austria. The building, designed by Vienna firm DERENKO, rises 16 storeys above Rainerstraße, an intentional contrast to the city’s baroque and classical skyline. Where most development near the station keeps a low profile, the glass curtain wall here makes no apology for contemporary ambition.

The hotel’s interior follows a consistent modernist palette: raw concrete panels, black lacquered surfaces by Egger using their PerfectSense Matt finish, wood-effect anti-allergic flooring, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that floods the upper floors with light. The design is functional without being cold. The 120 rooms are compact, ranging from around 16 to 31 square metres, but the quality of materials and the integration of the art programme give each space a considered feel.

Art runs through the property not as decoration but as a standing commitment. The Arte Hotels brand places emerging artists throughout its public spaces, and the Salzburg location has hosted exhibitions and commissions since opening. The 16th-floor rooftop bar, with its 14-seat terrace, is the highest public point in the building and offers a clear view toward Kapuzinerberg and the city’s rooftops.

The location in Elisabeth-Vorstadt puts guests close to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, with the Altstadt reachable in roughly 15 minutes on foot or a short bus ride. Mirabell Gardens is about five minutes away, and the Congress Centre roughly ten.

Visiting

Rainerstraße 28, a short walk from the main station. The Altstadt is around 15 minutes on foot or one bus stop. Mid-range to upscale pricing. Suited to visitors arriving by train or departing early by rail, and to those who want design character at a city-edge address. A small wellness area with sauna and gym sits on the 2nd floor.
