Berliner Block

A near-cube of Krastal marble sits in Mirabell Gardens, doing almost nothing by design. That is the point. Berliner Block by Gerhard Trieb is one of the quieter provocations on Salzburg’s Walk of Modern Art, and one of the most effective.

The Story

The Berliner Block arrived in Mirabell Gardens in 2017, the thirteenth work in the Salzburg Foundation’s Walk of Modern Art. It is not large: approximately 99 cm tall and 88 cm on each side, cut from Krastal marble, its surface worked into a milled linear mesh of varying widths and depths. That mesh is the only gesture toward ornament. Otherwise, the piece is a block.

The title links the work to Berlin’s historic granite street-paving slabs, the flat, heavy stones that lined the city’s thoroughfares from the 19th century onward. Those stones carried the weight of history in the most literal sense. Trieb’s piece carries that association into a garden most visitors know from the Do-Re-Mi sequence in The Sound of Music, a setting already freighted with a particular, cheerful version of Salzburg.

Against the Baroque geometry of the flowerbeds and the axial paths of Mirabell Gardens, the block does not harmonise. It refuses. The milled surface catches light differently from the surrounding stone, and the near-cubic proportions sit outside the garden’s ornamental vocabulary. Trieb has said the work belongs to a cube cycle he developed between 1995 and 2005, exploring geometric tension in public space. Here, the tension is between an elemental form and one of the most curated public gardens in Central Europe.

In Mirabell Gardens, freely accessible at all times. No ticket required. The block sits among the other contemporary works on the Walk of Modern Art route, which takes roughly 1.5 hours to complete on foot across Salzburg.
