Beyond Recall

Four neon cubes sit at the bridgeheads of the Staatsbrücke, burning quietly at all hours. Most people cross the bridge without stopping. That is the condition the work addresses.

The Story

When Brigitte Kowanz installed Beyond Recall on the Staatsbrücke in 2011, the bridge was undergoing renovation. The four semi-transparent glass cubes went up at the bridgeheads, each containing neon text in Kowanz’s own handwriting, each fitted with mirrors so the words multiply and recede into apparent infinity. The phrases include “Beyond Recall,” “Envision,” and “Dedicated Secret.”

The bridge sits between Getreidegasse and Linzer Gasse, connecting the two halves of Salzburg over the Salzach. Hundreds of thousands of people cross it every year. During the Nazi occupation, forced labourers worked on the bridge and died. When the bridge reopened in 1949, the ceremony focused on traffic flow and tourism. No plaque appeared for decades. The silence held.

Beyond Recall is piece number ten on the Salzburg Foundation’s Walk of Modern Art, part of a city-wide programme that placed contemporary works in public space. But the work carries a weight that most of the other pieces on the Walk do not. Kowanz, who spent her career treating light as a form of language, chose neon because it does not rest. It glows from the bridgeheads whether or not anyone is reading it. The title is exact. Some things cannot be called back.

Kowanz died in 2022. The neon keeps burning.

Visiting

On the Staatsbrücke, freely accessible at all times. The cubes are at their most visible after dark, when the neon reads clearly against the river and the surrounding stone. No ticket, no entry point; the work is simply there on the bridge you are already crossing. Best seen slowly, at the bridgehead, looking into the mirrored text rather than past it.
