A comprehensive documentation centre on the Obersalzberg plateau above Berchtesgaden, built on the ruins of Hitler’s Berghof mountain retreat. The most serious WWII historical site in the greater Salzburg day-trip orbit.

The Story

The Obersalzberg was not simply a holiday retreat. It was the second seat of Nazi power after Berlin, where Hitler lived for extended periods, where senior figures of the regime gathered, and from which key decisions were made. To visit it only as scenery, as many do when they take the bus to the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s Nest) above, is to miss almost everything important.

The Dokumentationszentrum was built specifically to make that evasion impossible. Its permanent exhibition covers the full arc of National Socialism from the movement’s rise through the crimes of the regime, the war, and its aftermath, drawing on original documents, photographs, film, and objects recovered from the site itself. The ruins of Nazi-era buildings are visible within the grounds. Underground bunker systems built beneath the Obersalzberg can also be visited.

The centre and the Kehlsteinhaus are a natural pairing, but the sequence matters: visit the documentation centre first, and the summit building becomes a different kind of experience.

  • Duration: minimum 2 hours for the permanent exhibition; allow a half day with Kehlsteinhaus
