Berchtesgaden & Eagles Nest Tour

A full-day excursion across the German border to Berchtesgaden and, in season, the Eagle’s Nest at 1,834 metres. The mountain was Hitler’s retreat; the views are extraordinary; the history is inescapable. One of the most loaded day trips in Central Europe.

The Story

The road to the Kehlsteinhaus was engineered in thirteen months between 1937 and 1938 specifically as a gift to Hitler for his fiftieth birthday. Today it carries tourists to a mountain-top terrace with panoramic views across the Berchtesgaden Alps. The Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg, built on the former Nazi compound below, provides the essential historical framework: photographs, documents, and reconstructed interiors that explain how this quiet Alpine valley became one of the nerve centres of the Third Reich.

The Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden is the practical alternative when the Eagle’s Nest road is closed between November and April. Wooden slides, underground salt lakes, and guides in miners’ gear make it a crowd-pleaser in its own right, and it connects directly to the salt-extraction story that underlies Salzburg’s own history and wealth.

Panorama Tours Salzburg runs the standard day trip with commentary in English. The trip is roughly 45 minutes each way from Salzburg, making it viable as a full day with time at both the Dokumentationszentrum and the Eagle’s Nest (or salt mine) before returning.

Visiting

Book through Panorama Tours Salzburg or Bobs Special Tours. Eagle’s Nest runs May to October only; winter visits focus on Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden or Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg alone. Morning departure recommended to allow time at multiple stops.
