Herz-Jesu-Asylkirche

Most people never see this one, and that is the point. The Herz-Jesu-Asylkirche in Salzburg-Riedenburg is a small Neo-Gothic church from 1877-1878, designed by Friedrich von Schmidt, the architect who built the Vienna Rathaus, the city hall, and spent thirty years restoring St Stephen’s Cathedral. It sits inside the working Herz-Jesu-Heim senior home on Hübnergasse, free to visit during daylight hours when the building is open. Nineteenth-century churches are a rarity in a city built almost entirely in Baroque and medieval stone, and a genuine von Schmidt design here is rarer still. Roughly a 15 minute walk west of the old town; pair it with the Rainberg next door.
