The Story

The building on Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse that houses Hotel Elefant is reportedly over 700 years old, which puts its origins in the 13th century. Whether it functioned as an inn throughout that span is uncertain, but the fabric of the place reflects age that cannot be manufactured: vaulted ceilings, walls of considerable thickness, a layout that follows medieval logic rather than modern hotel convention.

Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse is one of the quieter lanes of the Altstadt, running roughly between Getreidegasse to the north and Domplatz to the south. Guests are within a very short walk of both the Salzburg Cathedral and the city’s busiest pedestrian street, but the lane itself is calm enough to forget either exists.

The Wirtshaus Elefant restaurant occupies the same building, making the hotel a more self-contained proposition than most Altstadt addresses. For travellers who want to eat in and wake up in a genuinely historic structure without paying luxury rates, the combination is hard to match in Salzburg.

The price positioning sits mid-range by Salzburg standards, which still implies a certain level of cost in a city that is not cheap, but it is meaningfully below the festival-tier hotels on and around Getreidegasse.
