Snapshot

Historic hotel perched at the summit of the Schafberg (1,783 m), above St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut. No road reaches it. The only way up is the Schafbergbahn cog railway or on foot.

The Story

The hotel predates the railway itself: before the line opened in 1892, guests were carried up in armchair carriers. The summit has been a destination in its own right since the early tourist age of the Salzkammergut, and the hotel has changed remarkably little in spirit since then.

What overnight guests get that day visitors never do is the mountain at its most extraordinary: dusk with the lakes below turning copper, a quiet summit once the last rack train descends, and a dawn that spreads across the entire Salzkammergut panorama in near-total solitude. It is one of the most atmospheric and genuinely unusual places to sleep in the entire region.

Visiting

  • Reach the summit via the Schafbergbahn from St. Wolfgang; last train schedules determine check-in logistics.
  • The hotel is seasonal, open only during the Schafbergbahn operating season (typically May to late October).
  • Book well ahead for overnight stays, particularly for rooms with east-facing sunrise exposure.
