Rack Railway
Steam-powered cog railway from St. Wolfgang to the Schafberg Summit at 1,783 m. Opened 1893, original steam locomotives still running in summer. Featured in The Sound of Music. One of the best heritage railway rides in the Alps.
The Schafbergbahn opened in 1893 and still uses original steam locomotives in summer. That sentence alone explains why a train that takes 35 minutes to travel 5.8 kilometres draws people who have no particular interest in lakes or mountain views.
The railway climbs through forest, then alpine meadow, then bare rock on a gradient steep enough to require the rack-and-pinion system that gives the cog railway its name. Steam and smoke drift back over the carriages. The sound is the sound of coal-fired machinery doing exactly what it was designed to do, 130 years on.
At the top, the Schafberg Summit delivers one of the broadest panoramas in the Salzkammergut: up to 13 lakes visible on a clear day, with the Wolfgangsee directly below. Walkers who prefer to earn the view on foot can buy a one-way ticket and hike either the ascent or descent, using the train for the other half.
The railway achieved a second wave of recognition after The Sound of Music (1965) featured it in the aerial sequences filmed above the Wolfgangsee. For a significant portion of annual visitors, this film connection is part of the draw.
Valley station at Markt 35 in St. Wolfgang, a short walk from the ferry landing. Operates May through October. Steam services run in summer; diesel trains supplement the schedule. Ascent approximately 35 minutes. Advance booking is strongly recommended in July and August; trains regularly sell out. One-way tickets available.
