A hotel in a Salzburg Altstadt building dating to 1342, with Roman walls in the basement and a cinema from 1905 inside. The name comes from its history as a brewery. Vaulted spaces, thick stone, and the particular atmosphere of a building that has absorbed seven centuries of use.

The Story

Kaigasse 33 has been occupied in one form or another since the Romans laid the walls now visible in the basement, walls dated to around 200 AD. The medieval structure above dates to 1342, when the building served as a monastery hostel, a waystation for clergy and pilgrims moving through the archbishopric. The brewing association came later, in the centuries when many Salzburg institutions brewed their own beer as a matter of economic necessity and institutional self-sufficiency. The name Kasererbräu carries that history without the brewery itself surviving.

What survived is the building: vaulted ceilings, metre-thick stone walls, irregular floor plans shaped by medieval construction logic rather than modern hotel planning. The Mozart Cinema, tucked inside the complex and operating since 1905, adds another temporal layer. It is one of the oldest continuously operating cinemas in Austria, and its presence inside a building this age is either improbable or entirely fitting, depending on how you think about Salzburg’s relationship with its past.

Staying at Kasererbräu is a choice about texture. The location on Kaigasse puts guests in the south Altstadt, a few minutes from Kapitelplatz, Petersfriedhof, Stift St. Peter, and the base of the Festung funicular. It is in the middle of the UNESCO heritage zone, which means the experience of walking out in the morning is the experience of walking directly into the city’s historic fabric. The tradeoff, as with most genuinely old buildings, is that the rooms are not identical and the corridors are not straight.
