Archbishop Markus Sittikus ruled Salzburg from 1612 to 1619 and left two lasting marks on the city. He commissioned Hellbrunn Palace, its gardens, and the elaborate water trick fountains that have surprised visitors for four centuries. He also patronised music and theatrical spectacle at a level that some historians connect to the later development of the Salzburg Festival tradition.
