Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg sits on top of the cliff that divides Salzburg's old town from the Mulln district, reached by a short lift ride from the Altstadt. The terrace view over the city is worth the trip on its own. The museum shows rotating contemporary art and is the city's primary venue for modern work.
The Story
When Museum der Moderne opened on the Mönchsberg in 2004, it placed contemporary art in deliberate conversation with the baroque city below. The building by Friedrich Hoff Zwink sits at the edge of the cliff, a white cube on a rock, and the juxtaposition is the point: the fortress at one end of the ridge, the museum at the other, the cathedral and the Altstadt spread between them from above.
The Mönchsberg Lift, which runs from Anton-Neumayr-Platz in the Altstadt, makes the ascent a matter of under a minute. Once up, the terrace behind the museum faces north over the rooftops toward the Salzach and the Capuchin hill beyond. On a clear day the view extends to the mountains ringing the city. This terrace is accessible to anyone who makes it up the cliff, with or without an interest in the current exhibition inside.
The museum operates as one of two venues for Museum der Moderne Salzburg; the Rupertinum on Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse is the city-centre complement. The Mönchsberg building handles the larger and more ambitious exhibitions. The programme rotates, and the quality of a given visit depends substantially on what is showing.
Wednesday evenings, when the museum stays open until 8pm, offer a different quality of light from the terrace and generally smaller crowds. In summer, this is among the better ways to spend a Salzburg evening.
Visiting
The museum is at Mönchsberg 32, reached via the Mönchsberg Lift from Anton-Neumayr-Platz in the Altstadt, or on foot along the ridge from the Hohensalzburg Fortress direction. Open Tue-Sun 10am-6pm, Wednesday until 8pm; closed Mondays. Adults EUR 15.00, or EUR 17.00 combined with the lift. No booking needed. Pairs well with a walk to Augustiner Braustuebl Muelln, which is directly below the Mönchsberg on the western slope.
