Neutor Express is a compact three-star hotel on Neutorstraße 9, directly beside the Neutor, the baroque rock-cut gateway at the western end of the Altstadt. It is four minutes on foot from the Grosses Festspielhaus and one of the better-positioned budget options in the historic core.

The Story

The address does most of the work here. Neutorstraße 9 places you immediately outside the Neutor, the 131-metre tunnel bored through the Mönchsberg in 1767 under Archbishop Schrattenbach, which marks the western entrance to the old city. From the hotel door, the Festival Quarter is four minutes away, Getreidegasse is six minutes, and the Cathedral district is ten minutes. The Monchsberg lift, the Pferdeschwemme, and the Toscaninihof are all around the corner.

For a 45-room budget hotel, that position is the whole argument. The rooms are practical rather than remarkable: desk, flat-screen TV, private bathroom, free Wi-Fi. There is a small convention space and a terrace gallery. Breakfast is available buffet-style.

The hotel scores well for location and badly for atmosphere. For visitors whose priority is spending time in the Altstadt rather than in their room, especially during the Salzburg Festival when every bed in the city centre fills months in advance, the price-to-location ratio is unusually good.
