The Großes Festspielhaus is the main stage of the Salzburg Festival, completed in 1960 with one of the widest stage openings of any opera house in the world. Built partly into the Mönchsberg rock face, it is both an engineering accomplishment and the beating heart of Salzburg's most famous cultural event.
The Story
When the Salzburg Festival needed a house equal to its postwar ambitions, Herbert von Karajan pushed for something that could match the grandest stages in Europe. The result was the Großes Festspielhaus on Hofstallgasse, designed by Clemens Holzmeister and completed in 1960. The stage opening is among the widest of any opera house in the world, figures that vary by source but are commonly cited at well over 100 metres across the full technical width.
The building did not arrive on an empty lot. It replaced and absorbed the former Court Stables (Hofmarstall) of the Prince-Archbishops, a long baroque structure running along the base of the Mönchsberg. The cliff itself was excavated to create the stage volume. Next door, the Felsenreitschule, the open-air stage cut into the rock by the archbishops' stonecutters centuries earlier, survives as the Festival's most atmospheric venue.
Maria Callas, Karl Bohm, and dozens of other names that defined postwar opera appeared here in the early decades. Anna Netrebko made her reputation on this stage. The foyer displays paintings by Anton Faistauer, which had a troubled history under National Socialism and were later reinstated. The square outside carries the name of Karajan himself: Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz.
Outside Festival season, guided tours run year-round and include access to the stage and backstage areas. They are the most direct way to understand what the building actually is.
Visiting
The Festspielhaus is at Hofstallgasse 1, a short walk from Residenzplatz in the Altstadt. Festival performances run July-August; tickets go on sale in January and popular productions sell out within weeks. Budget EUR 30-430 depending on production and seat category. Pairs naturally with Felsenreitschule and Haus fur Mozart, both adjacent on the same street.
