Sternbräu is a 16th-century inn and beer hall complex at the heart of the Altstadt, a labyrinthine arrangement of dining rooms, vaulted cellars, and a large courtyard beer garden. It is one of the few places in Salzburg built at a scale that can absorb a large group without difficulty.
The Story
The Sternbräu does not make the same argument as Krimpelstätter or Bärenwirt. It does not claim authenticity through distance from the tourist route. It is in the middle of the Altstadt, with an entrance directly off Getreidegasse, and it has been there since the 16th century. The history is real, the location is central, and the scale is enormous.
The complex has grown over centuries into something closer to a small village than a restaurant: multiple dining rooms at different levels, vaulted cellars, corridors connecting one wing to another, and at the centre a large inner courtyard that becomes a beer garden when the weather allows. In summer the courtyard fills early and the noise level rises in the manner of a place that accommodates hundreds of people and leans into it.
The cooking is Austrian beer hall: Schnitzel, roasts, dumplings, sausages, seasonal dishes. It is not attempting to compete with the city's better restaurants on refinement. The honest proposition is atmosphere and scale at a price that does not punish the visitor for choosing somewhere historic.
For a group that needs to eat together, or for a visitor who wants the full Altstadt beer hall experience in a genuinely historic building, the Sternbräu is the obvious answer.
