The Story
A small hexagonal memorial chapel in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, built in 1937 on the exact site of the former St. Nikolaus parish church, the church where Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber first performed Silent Night (Stille Nacht) on Christmas Eve 1818. The original church was demolished in the early 20th century after repeated flooding damage from the Salzach.
The chapel commemorates the moment with a carved relief above its entrance and has become a place of pilgrimage for visitors from around the world. A short journey from Salzburg city, it is one of the most emotionally resonant stops in the entire region.
Visiting
Freely accessible at all times on Stille-Nacht-Platz in the centre of Oberndorf bei Salzburg. No admission charge. The interior is small; allow a few quiet minutes. The adjacent museum gives context on the carol's origin and on the lives of Mohr and Gruber. Most atmospheric in Advent and at Christmas. Approximately 20 minutes north of Salzburg by car or by local S-Bahn.
