Restaurant

Triangel

Snapshot

Triangel is a restaurant and wine bar on Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse, directly in the shadow of the Grosses Festspielhaus and Felsenreitschule. It is one of the most reliably excellent and genuinely loved restaurants in Salzburg, and during the Salzburg Festival it becomes something else entirely.

The Story

Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse is named for the orchestra that plays the Salzburg Festival, and the Triangel has been feeding that orbit for years. The location is not incidental. Steps from the Festival Halls, it sits where the formal programme ends and the rest of the evening begins.

What makes the Triangel interesting is that it did not become a Festival restaurant in the sense of being expensive, stiff, and full of people performing their cultural credentials. It stayed a restaurant: informal enough that Salzburg residents eat here throughout the year, serious enough that the international audience that arrives in July and August does not feel it has settled. The wine list is genuinely good, chosen with knowledge rather than prestige markup. The food is consistently solid.

In Festival season the tables become sociologically unusual. The conductor who led the evening’s performance, the subscriber who has been coming for thirty years, the Salzburg family who eats here every Thursday: they are all in the same room, at the same prices, eating the same food. That combination of democratic informality and genuine quality is rare in a city that could easily have taken the other path.

Visiting

Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse 7, steps from the Grosses Festspielhaus and the Felsenreitschule in the Altstadt. Monday to Saturday, lunch and dinner; closed Sunday. Mains EUR 15-30; wine by the glass from EUR 5. Booking recommended, and essential during the Salzburg Festival in July and August. Combine naturally with an evening performance at the Festival Halls.

Spritzer

White wine + sparkling water. Austria's default summer drink. Half and half. Costs less than a soft drink. Everyone drinks it. Nobody pretends it is anything more than summer in a glass.
