Four days in October, jazz takes over Salzburg’s Baroque squares, churches, and cellar bars. Most performances are free. The summer crowds have gone. This is what the city looks like when it belongs to its own people again.

The Story

Jazz and the City happens in the gap between summer and Christmas: late October, when the grand tourist machinery of Salzburg has wound down for the season. The Residenzplatz outdoor stage, the courtyards off Getreidegasse, the vaulted cellar bars, the church naves, and the Jazzit Salzburg indoor programme together turn the Altstadt into a distributed concert venue for four days. The vast majority of concerts are free.

The contrast is deliberate and it works. Baroque architecture is not a neutral backdrop for jazz; the combination has a specific friction that the festival has leaned into for years. Audiences bring blankets and bottles to Residenzplatz and sit in the square watching brass and keyboards against a cathedral facade that was built for quite different ceremonies.

October in Salzburg is a different proposition from July. The hotels are cheaper, the queues are shorter, and the people on the streets are more likely to be Austrian. Jazz and the City amplifies that shift rather than reversing it. It is one of the genuinely good reasons to visit outside the peak.

Visiting

No registration required for free outdoor concerts: arrive, find a spot. Jazzit Salzburg hosts indoor ticketed events; book in advance for headliner nights. Festival programme published in September at salzburg-altstadt.at. Late October; check exact dates each year. Combine with the Schranne Salzburg Thursday market if visiting mid-week.
