What it is

Thursday mornings at the Andrakirche in the Neustadt: regional farmers selling produce to the people who will cook it that day. The genuine feel of a provincial Austrian market set in one of Europe's most beautiful cities.

The Story

The Schranne has been Salzburg's Thursday market for a very long time. It occupies the square around the Andrakirche on the right bank of the Salzach, spreading toward Mirabellplatz when trade is good. The vendors are regional farmers and producers from the Salzburg Umland and the Alpine valleys to the south: vegetables pulled from the ground that week, eggs from small-scale poultry farms, wheels of regional cheese, sourdough loaves, jars of honey, seasonal fruit, flowers.

The people buying from these stalls are Salzburg residents who shop here weekly. The dynamic is not a craft fair or a tourist market with artisanal packaging; it is a functional food market that has not changed its essential character because the city around it became famous. That is its value.

Visitors who spend their entire Salzburg trip in the Altstadt, south of the Salzach, tend to see Salzburg as a museum piece. A Thursday morning at the Schranne, on the right bank, gives access to the version of the city that runs independently of its own mythology.

Visiting

Thursday mornings; the market is active from roughly 6am and winding down by noon. Located at Andrakirche in the Neustadt, accessible by foot from Mirabell Gardens or Linzer Gasse. No entry fee. Bring cash; not all vendors take cards. Combine with a walk on Linzer Gasse or the Kapuzinerberg Circuit for a full right-bank morning.
