Mirabell Christmas Market

Salzburg has several Christmas markets. The Mirabell market on the right bank is the calmer one: smaller than the Domplatz cluster, mixed crowd of locals and visitors, and the illuminated Mirabell Gardens directly alongside.

The Story

The market sits on Mirabellplatz in front of Mirabell Palace, the Baroque residence that most visitors associate with the “Do-Re-Mi” garden scene from The Sound of Music. It is a working square: trams pass, the university is nearby, the main shopping street is a short walk. That keeps the crowd more representative of the actual city than the purely tourist-facing Domplatz market across the river.

The Lions Club Salzburg Mirabell runs the event. Stalls carry hand-carved nativities, Tyrolean glass, and beeswax candles; mulled wine and chestnuts run about €3 each. A small stage hosts evening choral performances. None of this is unique in Salzburg’s context, but the Mirabell Gardens directly adjacent are illuminated from late afternoon, and the view across the Salzach toward the Cathedral and Fortress is exactly what a winter evening in Salzburg should look like.

It runs longer than most markets, through January 1, which matters for visitors arriving in the week between Christmas and New Year.

Visiting

• When: Late November to January 1.
• Hours: Mon-Thu 10 am-8:30 pm; Fri-Sat 9 am-9 pm; Sun 10 am-8:30 pm. December 24 closes at 3 pm.
• Cost: Free entry. Mulled wine ~€3, chestnuts ~€3, crafts €5-15.
• Getting there: Trolleybus to Mirabellplatz, or 15-minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof.
• Tips: Come in the evening. Walk through the illuminated gardens after. The market runs through New Year’s Day.
