The Story

Most major city marathons run through streets that are incidentally scenic. The Salzburg marathon runs through streets that are specifically, deliberately beautiful: the UNESCO World Heritage Altstadt, along the Salzach with the fortress and the Alpine backdrop visible, past the grand squares and Baroque facades that define the city’s identity. The setting does not require any knowledge of running to appreciate from the pavement.

The event runs multiple distances: full marathon, half marathon, relay, and shorter options. The full marathon is the headline, but the half marathon and relay attract a broader field. The city-centre finish brings runners through the Altstadt to one of the main squares, which creates a natural spectator environment in a location that would be worth visiting regardless of the race.

Late April and early May is a seasonally strong time to be in Salzburg. Spring light, manageable tourist numbers, and a city that has not yet shifted into the intense summer mode that the Salzburg Festival generates. The marathon weekend adds a particular energy to that window.

Visiting

Register at salzburg-marathon.at; popular distances sell out. Late April/early May; check exact date each year. Non-runners can follow the course at Residenzplatz, along the Salzach embankment, or near the finish for a good spectator position. Hotels book fast for marathon weekend; reserve early.
