Church
The Andräkirche is the parish church of the Lehen district, built 1898-1902 as Salzburg expanded beyond its baroque core. Its red-brick neo-Gothic tower is unusual in a city of cream plaster churches. Located on Mirabellplatz, opposite Mirabell Palace.
Most of the churches visitors see in Salzburg were built during the same baroque campaign of the 17th century, commissioned by wealthy archbishops for a city that was, at that moment, one of the richest in the German-speaking world. The Andräkirche belongs to a different moment entirely: the industrial expansion of the late 19th century, when Salzburg was growing outward and needed parish infrastructure for a working-class population that had arrived without one.
Built between 1898 and 1902, the church served the Lehen district to the north of the Altstadt. The neo-Gothic style was the standard ecclesiastical language of the period in the Habsburg lands, but the red-brick tower is a local departure: a material more common in northern Germany than in Salzburg, where plaster and stone dominate.
It is a minor entity in the IS context, proportional to its actual significance as a neighbourhood church rather than a destination. Worth a brief pause if you are already at Mirabell Palace across the square.
