Salzburger Landestheater

Snapshot

The Salzburger Landestheater is Austria’s oldest continuously operating theatre outside Vienna, established in 1775 and still the city’s primary year-round performing arts institution. It runs from October through June with its own resident ensemble, producing opera, operetta, musicals, drama, and dance: the civic counterpart to the summer Salzburg Festival.

The Story

Most visitors associate Salzburg’s performing arts life with the Salzburg Festival, and for good reason: the Festival is one of the world’s great music events. But the Festival runs for five weeks in summer, and the rest of the year Salzburg’s performing arts are carried by the Landestheater. Established in 1775, it predates the Festival by nearly 150 years and has been in continuous operation ever since.

The company performs in the Salzburger Landestheater building on Schwarzstraße, directly across the Salzach from the Altstadt, a nineteenth-century theatre of appropriate scale for a state institution of this kind. The resident ensemble covers opera, operetta, musicals, drama, and dance over the course of a season running October through June; the programme is broadly designed for a mixed audience, with classical opera sitting alongside more accessible work.

The associated Salzburger Philharmoniker performs both in the theatre and in independent concerts. It is distinct from the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and from the Vienna Philharmonic, which visits only for the Festival. The Philharmoniker is the Landestheater’s own orchestral body, and its independent concert series adds to the city’s musical offering across the winter season.

For visitors arriving outside the Festival window, the Landestheater is the most consistent and varied programme in the city. Ticket prices are substantially more accessible than Festival prices, and the quality of production is serious: this is a fully funded state institution, not a tourist programme.
