A bronze Herbert von Karajan caught mid-rehearsal, baton in hand, in the garden of the Makartplatz house where the conductor grew up. Anna Chromy cast it in 2001, so it is a recent monument rather than a historic one. Free to view, two minutes from the Mirabell Gardens entrance. Worth a short stop if you cross the Salzach toward the Neustadt.

    Born in Salzburg, died near Salzburg. Widely regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. Artistic director of the Salzburg Festival for much of the postwar period. The square in front of the Grosses Festspielhaus bears his name. His legacy dominates the classical music world to this day.
