Eberhard II held the archbishopric for an extraordinary 46 years (1200-1246), the longest reign in Salzburg's history, and under his leadership the city reached the peak of its territorial and political influence. His domain covered vast swathes of what is now Austria and Bavaria.
He significantly expanded Hohensalzburg Fortress, strengthening its military capability into the stronghold that would prove impregnable for centuries. A skilled diplomat, Eberhard navigated the bitter conflicts between the papacy and Emperor Frederick II with considerable dexterity, broadly supporting the papal side while preserving Salzburg's autonomy.
His nearly half-century tenure shaped the political geography of the region more than any other single figure in Salzburg's medieval history.
