Gerhard Reus is the Salzburg-born guide and entrepreneur behind this site. He grew up here, left, came back, and learned to see the city through the eyes of people arriving for the first time. That education never stopped.

The Story

Gerhard Reus grew up in Salzburg largely ignoring what everyone else came to see. The fortress was there. The cathedral was there. He had other plans. After school he traveled, lived abroad for stretches, and worked his way through the hospitality world from hostels to hotels, absorbing how people move through places that are not their own.

The turning point came when he took a rickshaw taxi job in the Salzburg Altstadt. The questions passengers asked, questions about what they were looking at and why it mattered, pushed him to research the city as if he had never lived there. He found things he had walked past for twenty years without noticing. The deeper he went, the more interesting it became.

He pursued Austria’s state guide certification, a qualification that requires multi-semester training and a notoriously demanding state exam. With that credential he founded Free Walking Tour Salzburg in 2019, offering a tip-based tour that ran every day for the first hundred days without interruption. The format was deliberate: he wanted the tour’s value to be set by the people who took it, not priced in advance.

Introducing Salzburg is the deeper project. It starts from the same conviction that guided the tours: the most interesting Salzburg is the one visitors rarely get to, the one built up in layers of history, small decisions, and contradictions that a brochure cannot hold. That is what this site exists to give them.
